Hey there — I’m Dave Hakamaki, a Photographic Craftsman (Cr.Photog.), speaker, educator, and photographer based in Iron Mountain, Michigan, right in the heart of the beautiful Upper Peninsula. Since 2002, I’ve run Cutting Edge Photography, a thriving home-based studio that’s become the area’s go-to choice for high school seniors, youth and high school sports, and commercial photography.
Before photography took over my life (in the best way possible), I came from the cutthroat business world and taught college-level business, marketing, and economics at several institutions, including Bay College, Northland College, and the University of Michigan. That background gave me the tools to build a successful studio and to help other creatives turn their passion into a sustainable business.
I hold degrees from Northern Michigan University (B.S.) and the University of Michigan (M.A.), as well as a Photography degree from the New York Institute of Photography. Over the years, I’ve also taught photography at Bay College and worked as a business development consultant — experience that adds a practical edge to everything I teach and create.
I’ve had the honor of working closely with some of the biggest names in the photography industry, serving as a Miller’s Professional Imaging Speaker, Flashpoint Lighting Ambassador, Savage Universal Ambassador, Evoto Ambassador, and Fundy Storyteller. My presentations across the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. blend education, inspiration, and a dash of humor — covering everything from lighting and client interaction to sales and marketing strategies that actually work.
Outside the studio and stage, you’ll probably find me on the field — I’ve spent over 11 years coaching Little League Softball, Travel Softball, and Youth Football. Working with young athletes keeps me grounded, teaches me patience, and reminds me of the importance of teamwork and growth — lessons that carry right over into my photography and mentoring.
Cutting Edge Photography is proud to be a member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), Wedding & Portrait Professionals International (WPPI), and the UK Society of Photographers (SWPP).
At the end of the day, I’m just a guy who loves creating stories — whether through photos, coaching, or helping others chase their own version of success.
